Changes to Instagram - new safety settings for young people

Instagram has recently announced new safety settings young people under the age of 18.

Parents and carers will now have more control over how their under 18s use the platform, including interactions with other users and exposure to potentially harmful content.

Instagram's new Teen Accounts are designed to help keep young people safe on the platform by limiting inappropriate content, contact, and time spent online. The accounts include a number of built-in protections, such as:

  • Private accounts: Teens automatically have private accounts
  • Messaging restrictions: Teens can only message certain people
  • Tagging and mentions: Teens can only be tagged and mentioned by certain people
  • Time limits: Teens receive reminders to leave the app after 60 minutes per day
  • Overnight notifications: Notifications are muted overnight
  • Content restrictions: Teens see content that's appropriate for their age
  • Offensive words: Offensive words and phrases are filtered out of posts and messages

Young people under 16 need parental permission to change the settings on their Teen Account. For young people aged 16–18, the settings can be changed independently, unless the account is supervised by a parent or carer.

Parents and carers can also use the Supervision feature to monitor their child's account. This feature allows parents to:

  • Set time limits on Instagram
  • Approve or deny requests to change their safety settings
  • See insights about how their child uses Instagram.
