SMSC

Promoting SMSC at the Nottingham Girl’s Academy

SMSC stands for spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. All schools (including Academies and Independent schools) in England must show a commitment to promoting the following aspects:

Spiritual:  Explore beliefs and experience; respect faiths, feelings and values; enjoy learning about oneself, others and the surrounding world; use imagination and creativity; reflect.

Moral:  Recognise right and wrong; respect the law; understand consequences; investigate moral and ethical issues; offer reasoned views.

Social:  Investigate and moral issues; appreciate diverse viewpoints; participate, volunteer and cooperate; resolve conflict; engage with the fundamental values of British democracy.

Cultural:  Appreciate cultural influences; appreciate the role of Britain’s parliamentary system; participate in culture opportunities; understand, accept, respect and celebrate diversity.

Religious Studies at Key Stage 4 and Key Stage 5:

All pupils at key stage 4 are offered 70 hours of religious studies as part of the personal development curriculum based on the AQA GCSE religious studies short course. The curriculum is delivered during tutor time, assemblies and drop-down days over years 10 and 11.

Pupils at KS5 are offered elements of the AQA GCSE religious studies short course which will enhance the course delivered at key stage 4, this is also delivered during tutor time, assemblies and drop-down days.

According to the government:

“SMSC is the training of good human beings, purposeful and wise; themselves with a vision of what it is to be human and the kind of society that makes that possible.”  Hansard, 2006.

As well as our trained teaching staff, we utilise external agencies into the SMSC and BV programme so that they can inspire our students more and develop their character into well rounded mature young women. External Agencies - Year by Year Synopsis - PDF
